Reimagine Lymington & Pennington

Repair. Reuse. Reimagine.

A small space for big change.

A developing community-led initiative — activities described here are proposals and ambitions, not established services.

Reimagining What Community Can Be

What if we could create a place where people share more, waste less, learn together and feel they belong?

Reimagine Lymington & Pennington is a developing, community-led, not-for-profit initiative designed to bring people, skills, ideas and resources together.

Its ambition is simple: to make better use of what we already have, whether that's tools sitting unused in cupboards, materials destined for landfill, skills that could be shared or people's time and experience.

Reimagine brings together practical creativity, sustainability, social connection and lifelong learning in a welcoming environment for all generations.

From repairing a bicycle to learning digital skills, borrowing a carpet cleaner, making something beautiful from discarded materials or simply sharing a cup of tea, Reimagine is about creating opportunities for everyone to participate.

We believe communities become stronger when people have more opportunities to contribute, not just consume.

The Library of Things — Borrow More. Buy Less.

One of Reimagine's flagship concepts is a local Library of Things.

Most households own equipment they use only occasionally. Drills, carpet cleaners, pressure washers, sewing machines, garden tools and party equipment spend much of their lives gathering dust.

A Library of Things offers a practical alternative. Rather than everyone purchasing the same equipment, residents can borrow what they need, when they need it, for an affordable fee or through membership.

What could you borrow?

Home and DIY

Power drills, sanders, wallpaper steamers, ladders and decorating tools.

Gardening

Hedge trimmers, pressure washers, strimmers and specialist gardening equipment.

Cleaning

Carpet cleaners, steam cleaners and upholstery-cleaning equipment.

Creative equipment

Sewing machines, craft tools, projectors and photography equipment.

Parties and events

Karaoke machines, disco lights, gazebos and event equipment.

Occasional essentials

Equipment that is useful for a day but expensive to purchase and store.

The proposed Library would operate through a straightforward online reservation and collection system, supported by volunteers and clear borrowing arrangements. The ambition is to make sharing convenient, affordable and accessible.

The equipment inventory and borrowing system are not yet operational.

Why it matters

For residents, it means saving money, freeing up storage space and gaining access to better-quality equipment.

For the environment, it means reducing unnecessary manufacturing, packaging, deliveries and waste.

For the community, it creates a shared resource that encourages cooperation and brings people together.

Repair, Reuse and Reinvention

Before we throw something away, could we give it another life?

Reimagine aims to develop a practical culture of repairing, repurposing and creative reuse. Working alongside local repair groups, craftspeople, businesses and volunteers, the project will explore activities including:

The vision includes a community workshop where people can learn to use tools safely, share knowledge and work on projects together.

Reimagine also wants to develop relationships with local businesses that regularly dispose of useful materials or equipment. Something one business considers waste could become a valuable resource for someone else.

Waste is often simply a resource waiting for a new purpose.
  • Repair cafés and practical fixing sessions
  • Bicycle maintenance and Build-a-Bike activities
  • Furniture restoration and upcycling
  • Sewing, mending and textile reuse
  • Reclaimed timber and pallet projects
  • Sailcloth reuse and creative maritime products
  • Electronics troubleshooting and basic maintenance
  • Creative projects using donated or discarded materials

Proposed programmes

Our Programmes

Making Mornings

Creativity and Connection

Designed particularly for older residents, people experiencing isolation and anyone who would benefit from friendly, purposeful social activity. Sessions would combine simple creative and practical activities — painting, sewing, small repairs, crafting, upcycling — with conversation, refreshments and companionship. No previous experience would be necessary.

The emphasis is not on what people can produce, but on what they gain through participation: confidence, connection, enjoyment and a renewed sense of purpose. Reimagine also hopes to work with local wellbeing organisations, care providers and social-prescribing networks.

Creative Afternoons

Discover Something New

Accessible workshops, informal learning and opportunities to explore new interests: art, pottery, textile design, music, photography, digital creativity, making and practical life skills. Local makers, artists, retired professionals and enthusiastic volunteers would be encouraged to share their knowledge.

Some activities could be free or subsidised, with affordable paid workshops helping to sustain the wider programme. Reimagine is interested in what happens when people who might never otherwise meet discover a shared interest.

Young People's Activities

Skills, Confidence and Opportunity

Learning by doing: building and repairing bicycles; practical DIY and maintenance skills; digital creativity, music and media; designing and making products from recycled materials; working alongside experienced makers and mentors; and developing teamwork, problem-solving and enterprise skills.

The aim is to provide welcoming, affordable opportunities that build confidence, independence and a sense of belonging. Young people would be encouraged to help shape the programme rather than simply attend it.

Skills Exchange

Everyone Has Something to Offer

Skills are a community asset. A retired carpenter may have decades of knowledge to share. A teenager might help someone navigate their smartphone. A keen gardener could teach propagation. A local designer might introduce someone to creative software.

The proposed Skills Exchange would create opportunities for residents to teach, learn, mentor and collaborate. Not every contribution needs to involve money — time, experience, enthusiasm and willingness to help can be just as valuable. Everyone can be a learner. Everyone can be a teacher.

Community Impact

Save Money

Borrow rather than buy, repair rather than replace.

Reduce Waste

Less manufacturing, packaging and landfill.

Learn Skills

Practical, creative and digital skills for all ages.

Build Connections

Bringing generations and neighbours together.

A Place for Everyone

Reimagine is designed to be inclusive across ages, backgrounds and abilities. The broader vision includes social spaces, creative workshops, movement and wellbeing activities, and opportunities for people with additional needs to participate in a supportive environment.

Possible activities include gentle exercise, yoga, drama, sensory-friendly sessions, family activities and community gatherings. The programme would evolve in response to what local people actually want and need.

We are particularly interested in creating opportunities for people who may not feel comfortable in conventional clubs, classes or social settings. The aim is a community space that feels welcoming, informal and genuinely accessible.

Our vision

A Community-Led Model

Reimagine Lymington & Pennington has been established as an independent, not-for-profit community group, with an adopted constitution and an emerging volunteer-led structure. It is developing relationships with local community organisations, businesses, educators, craftspeople and potential delivery partners.

Its proposed operating model combines affordable memberships, individual activity fees, Library of Things borrowing, workshops, space hire, sponsorship, grants and donations. The ambition is to create a financially sustainable initiative in which surpluses are reinvested into community activities.

Access and affordability will remain central to the project, with free and subsidised opportunities wherever funding permits.

The Connection to Maritime Futures Hub

Reimagine is an independent community initiative, but it shares many of the principles behind Maritime Futures Hub. Both projects believe in:

  • Bringing generations together.
  • Learning through practical experiences.
  • Giving young people meaningful opportunities.
  • Making better use of community resources.
  • Celebrating creativity, craftsmanship and shared knowledge.
  • Creating places where people feel they belong.

Reimagine provides an opportunity to test programmes, develop partnerships, understand local demand and learn what makes a successful community space. Those lessons could help inform the future community programme at the Lymington Drill Hall.

Reimagine is not dependent on the Drill Hall project proceeding, and its own identity, governance and community purpose remain distinct.

Different projects. Shared values. A stronger community.

Help Us Reimagine

Reimagine is being developed with the community, for the community. We would love to hear from people who can contribute ideas, time, skills, equipment, materials or practical support.

Whether you're a retired craftsperson, a local business with surplus materials, a potential sponsor, a community organisation or someone who simply wants to get involved, there could be a place for you.
